Definition of Success
What is your definition of success? Is it a definition that you have been taught by influence? Or is your definition something unique to you?
I recently read an article on the different definitions of success and it got me thinking. What is MY definition of success? If my definition were based on the influence of the stereotype of my current city (L.A.), I would be very unsuccessful. I don’t drive a German manufactured automobile, I don’t work in the “industry”, and I don’t know the movers and shakers of this “industry”. Nope, that’s definitely not my definition. And if it were, I think I would want to stab myself in the eye. I could not last playing that game. And for the record, since living here for a while now, I have been exposed to plenty of people that do not fit this stereotype. They are the creatives that do what they love for a living. (More on these fabulous people in my next post!)
I used to define my success by the “stuff” I had and by the opinions that others had of me. I didn’t know that at the time, but I can see it looking back. The feeling state that fueled my drive was acceptance. Now that I have focused on myself, sought to learn about myself, and nurtured ME…I could care less about other’s acceptance of me.
My definition of success today is the feeling of extreme happiness and peace in every aspect of my life. I am constantly striving towards this. And the more I stick to that, the more in manifests. It still blows me away to look at the difference in my life from when I was totally detached and focused on the external to when I began honoring ME.
Take a close look at what factors influence your definition of success. What is driving you?
I encourage you to ditch any and every external influence in creating your definition of success. When you take your focus off of external “stuff”, you become a better version of you. And in my experience, as you stay on this path, that external “stuff” starts dropping in your lap, creating the cherry on top of the dessert…NOT being the main course.
